Clarinex (Desloratadine)
Drug Uses
Clarinex is used for treating the symptoms of allergic conditions (eg, watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes, sneezing, hives). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
How Taken
Use Clarinex as directed by your doctor.
- Clarinex may be taken by mouth with or without food.
- Swallow Clarinex whole. Do not crush or chew before swallowing.
- Continue to take Clarinex even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. Taking Clarinex at the same time each day will help you to remember to take it.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Clarinex.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Clarinex is an antihistamine. It works by blocking the action of histamine, which reduces the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Clarinex, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Storage
Store Clarinex between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Clarinex out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Warnings/Precautions
You should not take this medication if you are allergic to desloratadine or to loratadine (Claritin).
Before taking Clarinex, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have liver or kidney disease.
Do not give this medication to a child younger than 2 years old without the advice of a doctor.
Desloratadine disintegrating tablets (Clarinex RediTabs) may contain phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this form of desloratadine if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
Possible Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat;
- fever, flu symptoms;
- seizure (convulsions); or
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Less serious side effects may include:
- dry mouth, sore throat, cough;
- muscle pain;
- drowsiness, tired feeling;
- nausea, diarrhea; or
- headache;
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.
